White Sauce Penne Pasta Recipe

– 12 oz penne pasta – 4 tablespoons unsalted butter – 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour – 2 cups whole milk – 1 cup heavy cream – 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese – 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder – 1/2 teaspoon onion powder – Salt and pepper to taste – 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional) – Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add 12 oz of penne pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Once melted, add 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour, whisking continuously for about 1-2 minutes until the mixture is smooth and slightly golden.

Stir in 1/2 cup of chopped onion, 1/2 cup of chopped green bell pepper, and 2 cloves of minced garlic. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the vegetables are softened.

Gradually add 2 cups of whole milk and 1 cup of heavy cream to the roux, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Continue to cook and stir until the sauce thickens and coats the back of a spoon, about 5-7 minutes.

Stir in 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder, salt, and pepper to taste. For an extra touch of flavor, add 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg if desired. Continue to stir until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.
