Homemade Naan

– 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast – 1 cup warm water – 2 teaspoons sugar – 3-4 cups all-purpose flour – 1/4 cup plain yogurt – 1/4 cup vegetable oil – 1 large egg – 2 teaspoons salt – 1/4 cup melted butter (for brushing) – Optional: minced garlic, chopped cilantro, or nigella seeds for topping

In a small bowl, combine 1 cup of warm water (about 110°F or 45°C) with 2 1/4 teaspoons of active dry yeast and 2 teaspoons of sugar. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.

In a large mixing bowl, combine 3-4 cups of all-purpose flour with 1/4 cup plain yogurt, 1/4 cup vegetable oil, 1 large egg, and 2 teaspoons of salt. Add the activated yeast mixture and mix until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8-10 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then use a rolling pin to flatten each ball into an oval or teardrop shape, about 1/4-inch thick.

Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Brush one side of the naan with water, then place it water-side down on the hot skillet. Cook until bubbles form on the surface and the bottom is golden brown, about 1-2 minutes. Flip and cook the other side for another 1-2 minutes. Repeat with the remaining dough.

Brush the hot naan with melted butter and, if desired, sprinkle with minced garlic, chopped cilantro, or nigella seeds. Serve warm and enjoy your Homemade Naan!
