French Toast Casserole

– 1 loaf of French bread, cut into 1-inch cube – 8 large egg – 2 cups whole milk – 1/2 cup heavy cream – 3/4 cup granulated sugar – 2 teaspoons vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon – 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg – 1/2 cup brown sugar – 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted – Maple syrup, for serving

Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Cut 1 loaf of French bread into 1-inch cubes and place them evenly in the prepared baking dish.

In a large bowl, whisk together 8 large eggs, 2 cups whole milk, 1/2 cup heavy cream, 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg until well combined.

Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all the bread is coated. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow the bread to soak up the custard.

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the baking dish from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature while the oven preheats.

In a small bowl, mix together 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup melted unsalted butter. Drizzle this mixture evenly over the soaked bread cubes.
